Background
In 2024, Septic Systems Australia (SSA) was proud to partner with Parks Victoria on a major upgrade at Silvan Reservoir Park, a popular destination in Melbourne’s east. This project formed part of the Urban Parks Active Wellbeing Program, which delivered important upgrades to 21 parks across Melbourne, to support healthy communities.
The aim of the program was clear: create spaces that support healthy, active lifestyles while protecting the environment for future generations. At Silvan Reservoir Park, the installation of a commercial wastewater treatment system was a key part of ensuring the park could continue to welcome large numbers of visitors safely and sustainably.
Design and Installation of the System
Parks Victoria engaged SSA to provide both the design and installation of the new wastewater treatment system. The scope of works included:
-
Installation of two large commercial septic tanks
-
Engineering a system capable of handling high seasonal visitor numbers
-
Ensuring minimal disruption to the surrounding environment during construction
-
Working in close coordination with Parks Victoria’s project management team
Our experienced crew carefully lowered and positioned the tanks, working within a confined site while maintaining strict safety and environmental controls.

Minimising Environmental Impact
One of the highest priorities during this project was to ensure that Silvan Reservoir Park’s natural character was preserved. This meant:
-
Strict protection measures for nearby trees and vegetation
-
Careful soil management during excavation and backfilling
-
Staged works to reduce disturbance for visitors and wildlife
-
Ensuring all infrastructure was fully concealed once completed
By focusing on long-term sustainability, SSA helped deliver a solution that meets both current and future needs of the park.
The Transformation After Installation
Following the installation, the site underwent a full landscaping and recovery process. Today, just months after the work was completed, the area looks untouched:
-
The grass has completely grown back, covering the entire installation site
-
Visitors walking through the park would never notice the extensive underground infrastructure
-
The surrounding environment has returned to its natural state, blending seamlessly with the rest of the park
This transformation highlights how thoughtful design and careful construction can achieve practical outcomes without leaving a lasting footprint on the landscape.

Why This Project Matters
Silvan Reservoir Park is one of Melbourne’s most beloved picnic and recreation spots, with thousands of visitors each year. Ensuring the park has the right wastewater infrastructure is crucial for:
-
Public health and safety – providing reliable wastewater treatment for high visitor numbers
-
Environmental protection – preventing contamination and ensuring water quality is maintained
-
Sustainable growth – supporting the long-term use of the park for future generations
-
Community enjoyment – ensuring facilities are upgraded without compromising the park’s natural beauty
Proudly Part of the Urban Parks Active Wellbeing Program
This installation was just one component of the Urban Parks Active Wellbeing Program, a $21 million initiative that upgraded 21 parks across Melbourne. By contributing to this program, SSA played a role in enhancing open spaces where people can connect with nature, exercise, and enjoy time with family and friends.
At Septic Systems Australia, we take pride in delivering wastewater solutions that not only perform to the highest standards but also respect the natural environments where they are placed. The Silvan Reservoir Park project is a perfect example of how infrastructure and nature can coexist in harmony.
